Penrose tiling In the 1970s, Roger Penrose discovered various aperiodic tilings of the plane. The most famous of these uses two different rhombi for tiles. A tiling is aperiodic if there are no non-trivial translations that are symmetries of the tiling and if there are not arbitrarily large periodic sections of the tiling.
