Poisson, Siméon-Denis (1781–1840) French mathematician who was a pupil and friend of Laplace and Lagrange. He extended their work in celestial mechanics and made outstanding contributions in the fields of electricity and magnetism. In 1837, in an important paper on probability, he introduced the distribution that is named after him and formulated a law of large numbers.
