Lorentz, Hendrik Antoon (1853–1928) Dutch mathematician and theoretical physicist whose work on the mathematical theory of the electron was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1902, jointly with his student Pieter Zeeman who had verified the mathematical results experimentally. He is also famous for the Lorentz–Fitzgerald contraction and Lorentz transformations.
