p-value (statistics) The probability that a given test statistic would take the observed value, or one which was less likely, if the null hypothesis had been true. While most text books construct hypothesis tests by finding critical values or constructing critical regions for a predetermined level of significance for the test, almost all published statistics report test outcomes in terms of p-values.
