random numbers Tables of random numbers give lists of the digits 0, 1, 2,…, 9 in which each digit is equally likely to occur at any stage. There is no way of predicting the next digit. Such tables can be used to select items at random from a population. Numbers generated by a deterministic algorithm that appear to pass statistical tests for randomness are called pseudo-random numbers. Such an algorithm is called a random number generator.
