Elementary symmetric polynomials can be expressed as polynomialsMathworldPlanetmathPlanetmathPlanetmath in sums of powers. For instance, one can use the binomial identity (x+y)2=x2+y2+2xy to re-express the elementary symmetric polynomial of power 2 in 2 variables:

Note that the algebraic form of these expressions does not depend on n, the number of variables; this is true in general. In fact, it is possible to take n to infinity and obtain an identity for infinite series under suitable circumstances, but that lies beyond the scope of the current entry.

These formulae can be derived using the Newton-Girard recursion relations. Moreover, these recursions can be used to provide an inductive proof that any elementary symmetric polynomial can be expressed in terms of sums of powers. It might also be worth pointing out that Waring’s formula allows one to do the opposite — express sums of powers in terms of symmetric polynomialsMathworldPlanetmath.

Whilst these recursions may be used to derive these formulae, they can be tedious to use; for deriving a particular such relation, it may be easier to determine coefficients by substituting particular values for the variables and solving linear equations, as will be demonstrated with an example. Suppose that we want to express the elementary symmetric polynomial of power 5,

in terms of power sums. Since this is of the fifth order, we shall only require sums of powers less than or equal to 5. By choosing these values strategically, the equations can be made relatively simple so as to reduce the work of solving them. One possibility is the following:

By combining equations 1,2,3,6, the following sparse system may be derived:

Likewise, subtracting equation 1 from equation 4 yields

c41+c32+4c221+c2111=0

Combining these equations with the already sparse eqnation 5 yeilds the following equations which express everyting else in terms of c11111:

c311=5c11111
c221=30c11111
c2111=-10c11111

Substituting this into equation 7, we learn that c11111=1/120, from which the values of the remaining coefficients follow immediately:
