Alexander, James (Waddell) (1888–1971) American mathematician and pioneering topologist, who did much to develop and make rigorous Poincaré's visions for algebraic topology and combinatorial topology, and who also first defined cohomology. In 1928 he introduced a polynomial knot invariant, now known as the Alexander polynomial.
