analytic number theory An area of number theory that largely employs methods from analysis. Its inception is usually credited to Dirichlet and his theorem about primes among arithmetic progressions. Other results employing analytical means include the prime number theorem, Chebyshev's proof of Bertrand's postulate, and the circle method of Hardy and Littlewood.
