Mirzakhani, Maryam (1977–2017) Iranian mathematician whose work was in the geometry and dynamics of Riemann surfaces. In 2014 she became the first female winner of a Fields Medal. Her birthday, 12 May, is now International Women in Mathematics Day, which coincides with Florence Nightingale's birthday.
