Bourbaki, Nicolas The pseudonym used by a group of mathematicians, of changing membership, mostly French, who since 1939 have been publishing volumes intended to build into an encyclopaedic survey of pure mathematics, the Éléments de mathématique. Its influence is variously described as profound or baleful, but it is undoubtedly extensive. Bourbaki has been the standard-bearer for what might be called the Structuralist School of modern mathematics.
