Hypatia (370–415) Greek philosopher who was the head of the Neoplatonist school in Alexandria. It is known that she was consulted on scientific matters and that she wrote commentaries on works of Diophantus and Apollonius. Her brutal murder by a fanatical mob is often taken to mark the beginning of Alexandria's decline as the outstanding centre of learning.
