Kovalevskaya, Sofya (1850–91) Russian mathematician who made significant contributions in analysis, partial differential equations, and dynamical systems, particularly in the study of Saturn's rings. From 1871 she was taught privately by Weierstrass in Berlin as the university would not permit her to attend classes. In 1874 she became the first woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics, and in 1884 she became a professor in Stockholm.
