Lighthill, Sir Michael James (1924–98) British mathematician, and Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge for ten years between Paul Dirac and Stephen Hawking. His main interests lay in fluid mechanics, and his work was important in projects as diverse as the Thames Barrier and Concorde and in the reduction of noise from jet engines as well as biofluiddynamics.
