Peano, Giuseppe (1858–1932) Italian mathematician whose work towards the axiomatization of mathematics was very influential. He was responsible for the development of symbolic logic, for which he introduced important notation. His axioms for the integers were an important development in the formal analysis of arithmetic. He was also the first person to produce examples of so-called space-filling curves (see Peano curve).
