proposition A mathematical theorem, usually accompanied by a proof deduced from axioms or previously demonstrated results. Pure mathematics texts, in particular, tend to present mathematical results as propositions and theorems (and lemmas and corollaries) deduced from axioms. Typically, a proposition is of less consequence than a theorem, though this is, of course, subjective. In logic, a proposition is equivalent to a statement.
