scientific notation A number is said to be in scientific notation (or standard form) when it is written as a×10n, where 1 ≤ a < 10 and n is an integer. Thus 634.8 and 0.00234 are written in scientific notation as 6.348×102 and 2.34×10−3. The notation is particularly useful for very large and very small numbers. See also order of magnitude.
