Briggs, Henry (1561–1630) English mathematician responsible for introducing common logarithms (base 10). Following the publication of tables of logarithms by Napier, Briggs consulted him and proposed an alternative definition using base 10. Briggs published, in 1624, tables including 30 000 logarithms to 14 decimal places.
