Pearson, Karl (1857–1936) British statistician influential in the development of statistics for application to the biological and social sciences. Stimulated by problems in evolution and heredity, he developed fundamental concepts such as the standard deviation, the coefficient of variation, and, in 1900, the chi-squared test. This work was contained in a series of important papers written while he was professor of applied mathematics, and then eugenics, at University College, London.
