place value (place value notation) In the Hindu-Arabic number system, the 1 in 100 and the 1 in 10 represent different values on account of their places in the numbers' representations. The introduction of place value relies on the introduction of 0. Previous number systems, such as the ancient Greek, had separately used A, I, and P to denote 1, 10, 100, having no notion of zero at the time.
