plane (in Cartesian coordinates) A plane in 3-dimensional space is represented by a linear equation, in other words by an equation of the form ax + by + cz + d = 0, where the constants a, b and c are not all zero. Here a, b, and c are direction ratios of a normal to the plane. See also vector equation (of a plane).
