randomization In experimental design, it is important that researchers do not have the flexibility to choose which subjects are assigned to different experimental groups if potential sources of bias are to be minimized, as they may (even subconsciously) assign subjects to the groups which they would expect to favour the outcome they expect or hope for. Depending on the nature of the trial, this may mean randomizing the nature of the treatment received or the order in which treatments are applied etc.
